What is Reiki?

Reiki is an ancient healing art of Japanese origin. The term Reiki is a combination of the words 'Rei' (universal life) and 'Ki' (energy). Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or practice and it is not a massage technique.

An individual’s ‘Ki’ should be strong and free-flowing. When the energy is balanced, the body and mind are in a positive state of health, but when the energy becomes weak or blocked it leads to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance or long-term illness.

Reiki can ease tension and stress and help the body to begin to heal on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional. Treatments take place in a safe quiet environment where the client has the opportunity to completely relax. Reiki is perfectly safe and can be used conjunction with conventional medical treatment.

A Reiki session is usually 60 minutes long. An initial discussion will give the client an opportunity to discuss any problems or issues they are experiencing and explore what they are hoping to achieve from the treatment.

The method of giving Reiki is simple. The client remains clothed and lies on a couch or sits on a chair if they prefer. The practitioner gently places their hands in a series of non-intrusive positions on or near the head and body. There is no massage or manipulation.

Some people feel sensations of heat or tingling, whilst others may have an emotional response indicating that the Reiki taking effect. Following the treatment, the client should feel deeply relaxed and calm.

Reiki practitioners will not diagnose any health conditions or predict a specific outcome from the treatment. Clients may be advised to visit their GP if the practitioner has concerns about their health. For the Reiki treatment to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for their own wellbeing and take an active part.

How Many Treatments Would I Need?

In some cases, a single session may be enough, but it is best to discuss this with the practitioner. If you have long-standing health or emotional issue, a series of sessions may be more beneficial. In general, if you find that positive changes are taking place, it is a good idea to continue treatment.
